Dr. (Prof.) Ashok Kumar Singh is a distinguished and highly respected retired urologist and kidney transplant specialist, renowned for his extensive expertise and compassionate patient care. With a career spanning several decades, Dr. Singh has made significant contributions to the field of urology, establishing himself as a trusted and proficient medical professional.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh earned his MBBS and MS in General Surgery. In 1983, he joined Christian Medical College, Vellore, as a Senior Registrar in Urology. Following that, he completed his postgraduate studies in Urology at the world-renowned Vienna University Hospital. He also served as a Consultant Urologist in the Department of Health in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Later, he joined Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) as an Assistant Professor of Urology and Kidney Transplant and retired as the Head of the Department of Transplant.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh performed the first PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) in Bihar in 1991. He pioneered many surgeries for the first time at PMCH, including PCNL, URS (Ureteroscopy), AV Fistula Formation, and Anatrophic Nephrolithotomy for staghorn calculi, as well as the exploration of the inferior vena cava for renal tumors (cancer).
In 2001, he established the Kidney and Stone Hospital in Patna. The hospital was among the first to introduce ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) using the world-famous Dornier lithotripsy machine from Germany. That same year, the hospital also began offering hemodialysis for renal failure patients, alongside other nephrological services such as percutaneous kidney biopsy and AV fistula formation.
This hospital offers state-of-the-art treatment for urinary stone management. Under one roof and on one table, multiple advanced treatments—such as ESWL, PCNL, URS, and open stone surgery—can be performed without the need to move the patient. This ensures that the patient becomes stone-free using the most appropriate method for their condition. At this hospital, urinary stone treatment is often an outpatient procedure; for most stones, ESWL is performed without anesthesia, and the patient can leave the hospital within 2 to 3 hours.
In addition to urinary stone treatment, the hospital provides a wide range of other urological services, including surgeries for urinary cancers, correction of congenital urinary abnormalities (such as PUJ obstructions leading to hydronephrosis), posterior urethral valve surgery, and reflux surgery.
Prostate surgeries like TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), urethral stricture surgeries (such as IOU), and all types of urethroplasty are also performed regularly.
The hospital offers laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder stones and various urological conditions. It has a variety of accommodation options, including AC rooms, non-AC rooms, and general wards, to meet the needs of every patient.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh's dedication to advancing urological and kidney care has made a significant impact in the medical community. His leadership at Stone & Kidney Hospital ensures that patients receive the highest quality care with the latest medical technology and treatments.
